Frontside and Backside

The issue of frontside (FS) and backside (BS) can be very confusing to a new skater. A common example would be BS boardslides. Many people think that a backside boardslide is a frontside boardslide, because you are sliding so that the front of your body is facing foward. This will hopefully clear up any confusion.

For grinds, it is very easy to distinguish between frontside and backside. Any grind where the back of your body is closest to the obstacle as you roll up to grind will be a backside grind. Any grind where the front of your body is closest to the obstacle as you roll up to grind is a frontside grind.

For spins, at 90 degrees, if the front of your body is facing the direction you are traveling, it is frontside. If the back of your body is facing the way you are traveling, it is backside.

For shuvits, it is the same as spins. Just pretend that you are spinning with the board and that your feet stay on the board. If it would have been a frontside spin, the shuvit is frontside. If it would have been a backside spin, then the shuvit would be backside.
