How do I get my daughter to stop hanging out with skateboarders?
Hi moms, my 15-year old daughter has been behaving weird lately. She has recently been spending the night out alot, and she’ll come home the next morning smelling like smoke. When I asked her she got angry and said it was from a bonfire from a camping trip she went on with the boyscouts she knows. But then when I drop her off at school in the morning, all of these punk skateboard kids come up to her, and one of them even holds her hand as they go to class. I’m afraid that my daughter has been lying, and that she’s fornicating and smoking with these boys. Any advice? Thanks for any help.

First off, just to be fair, my own daughter is a skater and hangs out with skaters and they are all good kids who do not smoke or do drugs or “fornicate”. Are they “punks” just because they ride a skateboard? That seems to be what you are saying, and I find that shallow, judgmental, and assuming, even as a parent of a teen myself. By the way, I am what I am sure would be called by most a very devout Catholic and my daughter attends a Catholic school and even I don’t make the jump from holding hands to fornication! Have the talk with her about your expectations and rules in regards to “boyfriend behavior”. So maybe she is smoking, maybe not. Cigarettes and bonfires smell distinctly different, you should know the difference immediately. If she is smoking in violation of your rules, then discipline her for that behavior.
As far as spending the night out? Why do you allow her? Your daughter spends all night out–and it would seem, from your question, this is without your permission–and you are worried about smoke and skaters? Not trying to put you down here, but this is what I am reading in your question.
